Located in Atlanta, Skyland Trail is a nationally recognized nonprofit mental health treatment organization serving adults ages 18 to 65 and older. We’re focused on individuals with complex mental health issues. In addition to a primary mood, thought, or anxiety disorder, many clients have co-occurring substance abuse, borderline personality disorder, or anxiety diagnoses.
Through our residential and day treatment programs, we help our clients reestablish their place in their families and communities and reclaim their lives.
Preparing for a Life Worth Living
At Skyland Trail we believe in a powerful mix of evidence-based therapies within an integrated, holistic treatment model. An individualized treatment plan and multidisciplinary treatment team will help you be the architect for the life you want to live. Our team of experts will help you take important steps toward independent living – including improving relationships with family and friends, returning to school or work; making meaningful connections in your community; and solidifying nutrition, exercise, and self-care into your daily routine.
We understand that you are more than a diagnosis. We may ask you to change your goals and expectations, but we will not ask you to make them smaller.
Time to Recover
We offer a unique continuum of care with deliberate step-downs and reintegration points. Our continuum includes residential care, day treatment, intensive outpatient, independence coaching, and transitional housing.
Clients participate in our treatment program an average of 4 to 6 months. We provide graduated support as you progress through our levels of care and return to independent living.
Programs like vocational services, pastoral counseling, and our LEAP social club forge connections between our clients, their peers, and the community. We help identify employment, education and volunteer opportunities. And we introduce you to community resources like the YMCA, gardening and arts organizations, faith-based organizations, and advocacy and support groups. Our team will help you determine how these resources may fit into your life, match up with your interests and passions, and help you stay strong, healthy, and connected to your community.
Skyland Trail offers a tailored mix of evidence-based and supportive therapies to help clients reclaim their lives. Clients engage with a specialized treatment team, peer support group, and structured schedule based on their diagnoses, symptoms and self-defined goals.
Specialized teams include:
- Young Adults with First Episode Psychosis
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Social Integration
A Dual Diagnosis program is offered as an additional area of focus across all specialized teams for clients with substance use challenges. In addition to receiving care from specialized professionals, this individualized approach allows clients to be part of a consistent peer group, kind of like a “homeroom,” where they can build trust and support one another.
Holistic Path to Wellness
In addition to expert psychiatric treatment, the holistic path to wellness at Skyland Trail includes music, art and horticultural therapy, workforce and school readiness, primary care services, family therapy, and healthy living and nutrition coaching. This integrated approach helps clients make a series of changes – from healthier eating, to better sleep, to new self-care strategies – that collectively add up to a healthier, happier life.
A typical week includes:
- one-on-one sessions with your psychiatrist and your counselor
- a daily diagnosis-based core group
- exploring nature as therapy in our greenhouse and gardens
- classroom-style education on topics like stress management and assertiveness coaching
- playing instruments or just humming along in music therapy
- peer support groups focused on topics like sobriety or processing grief
- working with clay or other materials in art therapy
- mindfulness and meditation groups
- CBT and DBT skills groups
- off-campus community outings
- sports and fitness activities
- cooking and consultation with our dietician
- vocational groups focused on returning to school, work, or volunteer activities in the community
- and other specialized group therapy sessions
We offer a structured schedule of more than 125 groups each week in addition to individualized sessions and community-based activities.
By helping you define who you are and who you want to be in addition to helping you develop practical skills for managing your mental illness, we give you the best chance at stopping the cycle of repeat hospitalizations and sustaining your recovery.
